Our Monday Night series offers a range of inspiring talks by passionate local speakers.

As the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire enters its fifth century, this talk goes back to the start of Sheffield’s metalworking journey to uncover where this local specialised industry originated from.

Starting with the earliest records in Sheffield history, this talk will chart the complex journey through to the foundation of the Cutlers Company in 1624 involving local landowners, the manor court, parish church, church burgess, town trust, taxation, national government rules, waterwheels and the needs of local cutlers to defend their craft and provide for their livelihoods.

Dr. Chris Corker is an award-winning business historian and Senior Lecturer in Management at the School for Business and Society at the University of York. His recent work examines how industrial centres form, exist and decline, and has been featured on BBC Radio 3’s Free Thinking. A former Chair of Portland Works and previously shortlisted for the BBC New Generation Thinkers scheme, Chris has been studying the history of Sheffield industry for more than 20 years.
