Sustainability Champions Honoured with Prestigious Award
The second annual South Yorkshire Sustainability Awards, celebrating the region’s eco-conscious leaders and their remarkable efforts to reduce their environmental impact, culminated in a dazzling black-tie awards ceremony at Magna in Rotherham on Thursday, 28 September.
This year’s awards witnessed an overwhelming response, with numerous applications pouring in from a diverse array of organizations across South Yorkshire, all united by a common goal – to minimize their footprint on our planet.
Among the well-deserved winners, The Green Estate Community Interest Company was the recipient of the prestigious Recycling Initiative of the Year award for their groundbreaking Green Waste Recycling Facility. This pioneering initiative, established in 2004, has revolutionised the recycling landscape in South Yorkshire.
Lian Noriega-Waite, Senior Production Manager at The Green Estate comments “We were honoured to receive this award in recognition of the service and products we have developed. It is another step in our ambition for the organisation in becoming a centre of excellence for adaptation and resilience and this service will become a showcase of a core element of growing engaging, adaptive and resilient urban places.”
The Green Waste Recycling Facility was conceived as a response to combat the issue of fly-tipping of green waste in Sheffield housing developments. Today, it not only provides a convenient local drop-off site for green waste but also plays a pivotal role in diverting organic matter away from landfills, effectively reducing the carbon footprint associated with green waste transportation.
This facility serves a wide range of customers, including local landscapers, universities, local councils, and domestic gardeners. The heart of their operation is the production of certified PAS100 peat-free compost, which boasts a complete lifecycle. Any excess material generated during the screening and shredding process is transformed into biomass, ensuring zero waste.
Moreover, The Green Estate has developed a specialised soil substrate, incorporating their PAS100 compost, British sugar waste products, and recycled aggregate. This substrate is tailor-made for green roofs, tree pits, and sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), contributing to a greener urban landscape.
To further emphasise their commitment to sustainability, The Green Waste Recycling and compost facility welcomes both businesses and members of the public to drop their green waste off and pick up peat free compost at 449 Manor Lane, Sheffield S2 1UQ, from 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. In an era where the race to achieve net-zero emissions is of paramount importance, the South Yorkshire Sustainability Awards continue to recognise and celebrate the outstanding contributions made by businesses, organisations, and individuals across the region. Beyond acknowledging the accomplishments of those already embarked on their sustainability journey, these awards aspire to inspire and motivate the broader community to embark on their own path towards meaningful change.
As we look ahead, South Yorkshire stands as a beacon of innovation, determination, and hard work in the global drive towards sustainability. The South Yorkshire Sustainability Awards brought together a community of businesses and individuals wholeheartedly dedicated to creating a more sustainable environment for our planet.
