Flagship Projects

Grey to Green is a groundbreaking environmental and economic development strategy devised by Sheffield City Council. It included the development of landscaped swales to take water above ground through an attractive new richly planted civic space. The Green Estate is proud to have been involved in the design, delivery and maintenance of this ground breaking project.

It responded to three issues in the city centre:

  1. re-connecting the Castlegate area, including the Law Courts and Victoria Quays;

2. re-using a large amount of redundant highway; and

3. avoiding the impact of future flooding, after the events of 2007.

Even with its recent completion, the project has already had a significant impact on the area. Visitors, residents and workers alike enjoy the new seating and the surrounding planting. The area is now hosting the regular Pollen Market every third Sunday of each month. Besides these economic benefits, the project has significantly increased biodiversity and improved surface water management. Win-win in every aspect!

We are now working with Mansfield District Council who have been inspired to create their own Grey to Green scheme in the town centre. Watch out for more updates posted in our news.
