Later this year, there will be a few changes to parts of Manor Fields Park.
Part of the lower end of the park will become an area for a new Sustainable Urban Drainage Scheme (SuDS). This will support the creation of 148 much needed affordable homes in the Manor Park Crescent and the Corker Bottoms / Harborough Rise area, by delivering the required ‘slowing of the flow’ to the overall drainage system reducing the risk of downstream flooding.
The project will also enhance Manor Fields Park, creating a new ‘wetland’ environment, which will support different species of plants and animals and enhance biodiversity. The area will be landscaped to include a number of walking routes and trails for visitors to explore and enjoy.
The works are to be delivered by Sheffield Housing Company (SHC) – in partnership with the Council’s Parks and Flood Management teams – and The Green Estate Community Interest Ccompany, which manages the park.
Communication with park users, stakeholders and the community at large, is already underway and experienced partners are working together to ensure the project is delivered in an efficient and sensitive way. Here are some FAQ’s below:
When will the works get underway?
The site compound is expected to be in situ by August, with the main works planned to begin in September 2023.
What are the benefits of the project?
As well as reducing the risk of flooding down river during heavy storms, the new SuDS area will create a vibrant new habitat that it is anticipated to deliver a 15% increase in biodiversity. The inclusion of new walking routes and trails will allow park users to enjoy this new and rich environment.
How long will the works take?
A small area of the park where the SuDS will be located, will be closed for approximately five months.
Will the park remain open to visitors?
Yes! The park will remain open. It is only a very small area of the park that will be cordoned off for the duration of the works. It is not expected that works will have any impact on calendared events taking place in the park this year.
Will there be any impact for park users and nearby residents?
There will be a need to divert park users to different entrances and exits to the park at times but there will be minimal disruption to the rest of the park. There may be some additional noise and traffic due to the works, but the team behind the project is working hard to limit this.
