The Green Estate is run with huge support from our amazing volunteers. They help us look after and bring to life this special place.

Whether you are looking to work in our historic spaces, the great outdoors or behind the scenes we have opportunities to suit all interests and time commitments. We love working with people from all walks of life, with no experience needed.

Costume Interpreter

Costumed interpreters help bring the stories of our site to life. You will share with our family visitors what life was like on our site in the past. If you enjoy being creative and want to engage children and their families in our stories, then this role is for you. We can provide you with a costume (or you can provide your own!) and help you craft a character suitable for our site.

You’ll…
Be friendly, welcoming and confident interacting with our visitors.
Make memorable moments for children and their families.
Be involved in our public open days and events.

We are looking for support on Sundays, in school holidays and for school sessions.

Tour Guide

The Tudor stone Turret House stands in grounds covered in meadows. The building is square in shape with three floors, two windows on each. it has a wooden door in the lower right corner and is topped with a rounded turret on the right side. The meadows are pink yellow and white. The sky is blue with white fluffy clouds.

Tour guides share the stories of our site and its landscape with our visitors. You will lead tours around our historic ruins and find engaging ways to talk about our wide-ranging history to all of our visitors. No prior knowledge of our site is needed, only a passion for storytelling and an interest in sharing stories with a wide-range of people.

You’ll….
Lead tours around our historic ruins and in our Turret House.
Provide great customer service by answering questions from our visitors.
Be an active part of a small team.

We are looking for support on Sundays and time commitment is flexible.

Gardening Team

This role is perfect if you want to add practical experience to your horticultural or land-based studies, or if you enjoy gardening, want to try it for the first time or simply want to enjoy the mental and physical health benefits of being outside and getting your hands dirty. You will be shown what to do and how to use tools safely and no experience is necessary.

You’ll…
Work at the historic Sheffield Manor Lodge and Manor Oaks House.
Enjoy making our grounds look gorgeous.
Undertake general garden maintenance tasks such as weeding, edging, and pruning.
Enjoy being part of a friendly and welcoming group who enjoy getting things done, in addition to a well-earned cup of tea.

The team meets every Tuesday from 10am – 2:30pm, with one hour for lunch.

Visitor Experience

Visitor Experience Assistants help provide a warm and engaging customer service. They will welcome customers, serve refreshments, and help keep the Discovery Centre looking at its best. This role is for you if you are cheerful and like to meet new people.

Put your great hospitality skills into practice.
Use the till and serve refreshments.
Be keen to be part of a small team.

Time commitment is flexible.

Education Assistant

Education and Activity Assistants help bring our nature and Tudor stories to life. You’ll know how to engage with children and their families, but you do not need to have any teaching experience to volunteer for this role. With a passion for nature and / or history we will provide the rest.

Work alongside our Education Officer to deliver to school groups.
Be kind and helpful to our schools that visit and take part in our activities.
Help to keep the Discovery Centre just as you’d like to find it.
Be keen to get involved and be an active part of a small team.

We’re looking for support throughout the year and for our open Sundays. 
Time commitment is flexible.

Children’s Activity

If you love being around children then this could be the role for you. More casual than our education sessions are our school holiday activities where you will help children (and often parents and carers!) with crafts and trails along different themes.

You’ll…
Work alongside our Visitor Officer helping children with activities.
Be kind and helpful to our families that visit and take part in our activities.
Help to keep the Discovery Centre just as you’d like to find it.
Help to keep the come up with ideas for new crafts and trails.

We’re looking for support Monday to Thursday in Sheffield school holidays. 
Time commitment is flexible.
